Certificate I in Transition Education

The Certificate I in Transition Education is offered in many TAFE Institutions in Victoria and is suitable for students with a disability or special learning needs. The course normally runs for one year and aims to provide young people with the skills to access further education, paid employment or work as a volunteer.

The guidelines for the Certificate I in Transition Education may vary from one TAFE Institution to another however, most students must:

  • Be 16 years of age or over
  • Experience mild learning disabilities or other learning and/or social difficulties.
  • Display age appropriate behaviours
  • Have the ability to take part in all course activities, including the ability to travel independently
  • Have the potential to benefit from the course
  • Display motivation to undertake and complete the course
  • Exhibit motivation to gain employment

The course is usually completed full time, although part time study is possible to allow for part time, voluntary or supported employment commitments.

The structure of the Certificate I in Transition Education consists of 6 core units over 900hrs. Core units include Individual Learning Plans, Personal Development, Travel, Orientation and Mobility, Exploring Adult Options and Community Access. The course also offers electives including: Life Skills focus, Literacy and Numeracy focus and Vocational focus.

It is advisable to check with the course coordinator at the relevant TAFE Institute about fees for the Certificate I in Transition Education.

Opportunities for Further Studies
Students who successfully complete the Certificate I Transition Education may move on to the following courses:

  • VCAL Foundation
  • Certificate I in Work Education
  • Certificate I in General Education for Adults
  • Certificate II in General Education for Adults
  • Any Vocational course at level I or II
